Chelsea 5–1 Ajax: Guiu, Caicedo and Estevao Shine in Champions League Rout
Chelsea delivered a commanding performance at Stamford Bridge, thrashing ten-man Ajax 5–1 in their Champions League group stage clash.
Chelsea started brightly, but it was the sending-off of Kenneth Taylor in the 18th minute that truly swung the game. Guiu immediately capitalized on the numerical advantage, heading in from a Fofana cross to put the Blues ahead. From there, Chelsea controlled the tempo, taking 18 shots and creating constant pressure on the Ajax defence.
Moises Caicedo added a second, his strike deflected past Pasveer, while Wout Weghorst pulled one back from the penalty spot to make it 2–1. However, Chelsea’s first-half dominance was cemented by penalties from Enzo Fernandez and Estevao Willian, giving the Blues a 4–1 lead at the break.
Chelsea’s attacking verve continued after the interval. Substitute Tyrique George made an immediate impact, scoring within minutes of coming on to extend the lead to 5–1. Academy players like Reggie Walsh also featured, showcasing Chelsea’s depth and promising talent from the youth ranks.
The Blues’ fluid wing play and clever positioning created numerous chances. Estevao, in particular, impressed with his acrobatic attempts and central movement, keeping Ajax defenders on their toes throughout the match. Gittens and Buonanotte provided constant support on the flanks, helping maintain the offensive pressure.
While the victory was emphatic, there were minor concerns. Jeremie Frimpong picked up a hamstring issue, marking a second setback in his debut season and raising questions over squad rotation and adaptation to the Premier League’s intensity.
Chelsea’s win moves them to 11th in the Champions League table, level on six points with Newcastle. The Blues will look to maintain momentum in domestic competitions, returning to Stamford Bridge to face Sunderland in a 3pm kick-off before upcoming Carabao Cup and London derby fixtures.
