Tuchel leaves Scott and Guehi out of England squad for Serbia clash
England manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Alex Scott and Marc Guehi will not feature in the matchday squad for Thursday’s World Cup qualifier against Serbia, with both players left to watch from the sidelines.
Scott, 22, had been hoping to make his senior debut after an impressive run of form for Bournemouth, but will need to wait a little longer to earn his first cap. The former Bristol City midfielder has been one of the standout young English talents in the Premier League this season, earning praise for his composure and creativity in the middle of the park.
Meanwhile, Guehi who has been nursing a minor injury since missing Crystal Palace’s last league outing has also been omitted from the 23-man selection. Tuchel opted to rest the centre-back as a precaution, with the Three Lions already guaranteed a spot at the 2026 World Cup after maintaining a perfect qualifying record.
Both players are expected to be available for England’s final qualifier against Albania on Sunday, as Tuchel looks to rotate his options and assess fringe players before finalizing his tournament squad.
Speaking ahead of the game, Tuchel admitted tough decisions had to be made. “It’s always difficult to leave players out, especially when they’ve performed well for their clubs,” the England boss said. “Alex has trained brilliantly, and Marc is recovering well. They’ll both be very important for us moving forward.”
Tuchel also hinted that not all of England’s attacking stars including Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Phil Foden will start together.
“We have to make choices that balance the team,” he explained. “It’s not about who deserves to play; it’s about what’s best for winning.”
England, unbeaten under Tuchel since his appointment earlier this year, will look to extend their 100% record in Belgrade before returning home to close out qualifying at Wembley.
