Tanzania arrests Kenyan-U.S. national with explosives
Tanzanian police have announced the arrest of a Kenyan-U.S. national at the border who is suspected of attempting to enter the East African country carrying explosives.
In a statement released Sunday evening, Tanzanian police said the 30-year-old man holds dual citizenship of Kenya and the United States and is a sergeant in the U.S. military.
The arrest was made by police in the Tarime-Rorya area on Sunday, November 16, 2025, around 6 a.m.
The security statement read: “A Kenyan-American, who is a sergeant in the U.S. military, was caught with four CS M68 grenades while traveling from Kenya into Tanzania in a Toyota Land Cruiser.”
Police have confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway to gather more information, and appropriate legal measures will be taken based on the findings.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in Tanzania following the general elections held on October 29, in which Samia Suluhu won with 98% of the vote.
After the elections, what had been a peaceful process turned tense as many citizens protested the results. The situation was further inflamed by the removal of two leading opposition candidates from the list of approved contenders.
