UK warns countries to take back citizens
The United Kingdom’s Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, told Parliament that sanctions should be imposed on countries that refuse to take back their citizens who arrive in the UK without proper documentation.
She made these remarks on Monday, November 17, 2025, as part of efforts to address the growing problem of thousands of people particularly from Africa entering the country without the required papers.
Countries mentioned include Angola, Namibia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), whose citizens may soon lose visa privileges, including for business people and visitors.
Mahmood said it is time for the UK to enforce its laws firmly: “I have made it clear to foreign governments that refusing to take back your citizens in violation of the law will come with consequences. My message is clear: accept your citizens or face suspension of entry into the UK.”
The new rules stipulate that “the right to remain in the UK on family grounds will only be granted to individuals with very close family members who are legally resident in the UK.”
The UK also plans to revise its human rights legislation, including Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which is often used in asylum cases involving family rights.
Currently, European and American countries are facing growing challenges related to migration, especially from Africa, where many cross dangerous waters to enter these regions illegally.
Many migrants flee unemployment, insecurity, and violence in their home countries—while others leave due to misinformation, believing life abroad is far better.
