Sevilla Thrash Barcelona 4-1 to revive Barca's Back-to-Back Losses in 2025
Barcelona suffered their heaviest defeat under Hansi Flick as Sevilla ran riot with a 4–1 victory at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, handing the Catalans back-to-back losses for the first time in 2025.
The result leaves Barça trailing Real Madrid heading into the international break and raises urgent questions about the team’s direction.
The night started disastrously when Ronald Araújo fouled Isaac Romero inside the box, leading to a VAR awarded penalty that Alexis Sánchez converted against his former club in the 13th minute.
Sevilla continued to dominate, and their persistence paid off when Jules Koundé lost possession, allowing Ruben Vargas to set up Romero for the second goal on 36 minutes. By that stage, Barcelona was second best in every department.
Marcus Rashford briefly reignited hope before halftime with a stunning volley assisted by Pedri, but that proved to be Barça’s only highlight. Despite controlling possession after the intervalending the match with 63% of the ball and completing 550 passes Flick’s side created little in front of goal. Their biggest chance came when Robert Lewandowski skied a penalty in the 71st minute, a miss that summed up Barcelona’s woes in front of goal.
Sevilla punished the visitors’ desperation. With 15 minutes left, Sánchez threaded a brilliant ball through to José Ángel Carmona, who finished coolly past Wojciech Szczęsny.
Five minutes later, Chidera Ejuke’s burst down the wing set up Akor Adams for a fourth, sealing a historic result for Sevilla, who had not beaten Barcelona at home since 2015.
Individually, Rashford 7.3 rating stood out as Barcelona’s best performer, while Araújo 5.7) and Lewandowski (5.2) epitomized the defensive frailty and attacking wastefulness on display.
Sevilla, meanwhile, saw José Ángel Carmona named Man of the Match, underlining their clinical edge and compact defensive organization throughout.
The 4–1 humiliation leaves Barcelona with serious structural issues to address. Flick’s high defensive line was repeatedly exploited, his substitutions failed to shift momentum, and the team’s lack of cutting edge was glaring despite 15 attempts on goal.
With a title race looming against an in-form Real Madrid, Barcelona face an uphill task to convince supporters that they remain genuine contenders for silverware this season.
