Liverpool’s hierarchy has placed Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique at the top of their long-term managerial shortlist as pressure intensifies on current head coach Arne Slot following a dramatic slump in form.

Slot, who delivered a stunning Premier League title in his debut season, has endured a disastrous second campaign, losing nine of Liverpool’s last 12 matches across all competitions. The alarming run has raised concerns among senior figures at Anfield, with discussions already underway about potential successors should results fail to improve.

According to club sources, Enrique who guided PSG to a historic treble last season, including their first-ever Champions League crown is viewed as the ideal long-term candidate. The Spaniard previously achieved similar success at Barcelona in 2015, and Liverpool executives are confident in his ability to rebuild a squad struggling for identity and consistency.

In the short term, the Reds could consider an extraordinary interim solution: a temporary return for Jurgen Klopp. The former Liverpool manager, currently serving as Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull, is admired internally, and officials believe he could stabilise the dressing room until the end of the season. Enrique is not expected to leave Paris mid-campaign, making a short-term caretaker option likely if Slot is dismissed.

Liverpool’s recent performances have deepened the crisis. Last weekend’s 3–0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield was followed by a humiliating 4–1 home loss to PSV in the Champions League, prompting further doubts about Slot’s authority within the squad. Reports suggest club executives fear the 46-year-old has “lost the dressing room” despite spending £426 million on summer signings.

Speaking after the PSV defeat, Slot maintained he still has backing from Fenway Sports Group:
“If you lose many times, people start asking questions. But in my conversations with the club, I feel their trust. It would be nice to turn it around with a win.”

Liverpool’s next three fixtures against West Ham, Sunderland and Leeds United are expected to be pivotal in determining whether Slot remains in charge.
