Isak Faces Transfer “Curse” As Liverpool’s Record Deal Joins Worrying Trend
Alexander Isak’s £125million move to Liverpool broke British records but it also placed him at the heart of an expensive Premier League pattern few have escaped.
In recent years, the most costly transfers to English clubs have rarely delivered titles. And Isak’s challenge now is to prove he can be the exception, not the rule.
The Swedish striker joined Arne Slot’s side just weeks after Liverpool smashed the transfer record with the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. Both deals have piled pressure on a squad already expected to maintain its title-winning standards.
History doesn’t offer much comfort. Of the ten most expensive Premier League signings ever, only two Jack Grealish and Darwin Núñez have lifted the trophy. Even then, both endured long spells of criticism before finding their footing.
Chelsea’s lavish spending under Todd Boehly has been the biggest warning sign. Enzo Fernández (£105m) and Moisés Caicedo (£115m) have yet to make the Blues genuine contenders despite their hefty fees.
Romelu Lukaku’s £97.5m return to Stamford Bridge flopped spectacularly, while Paul Pogba’s £89m reunion with Manchester United promised dominance but delivered only fleeting success.
Arsenal’s £105m man Declan Rice has fared far better anchoring Mikel Arteta’s side and becoming one of the league’s standout midfielders yet even he’s still chasing that elusive Premier League medal.
Isak, a clinical finisher with pace and composure, has already shown flashes of brilliance at Newcastle. But adapting to Liverpool’s system and outshining Mohamed Salah and Wirtz in attack will test his resolve.
As past record-breakers can attest, the price tag rarely guarantees glory. For Isak, it’s not just about goals it’s about breaking a curse that has haunted every record transfer since the Premier League began counting the billions.
