President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau was arrested on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, by a faction of his country’s military.


President Embaló himself confirmed his arrest in an interview with 'Jeune Afrique'. He said he was detained at noon, Bissau time.

He was arrested just days after participating in last Sunday’s presidential election, in which he declared himself the winner with 65% of the vote.

In addition to the President, the Chief of the Armed Forces of Guinea-Bissau, Gen. Biague Na Ntan, the Deputy Chief of the Armed Forces, Gen. Mamadou Touré, and the Minister of Internal Security, Botché Candé, were also detained.

President Embaló told 'Jeune Afrique' that no violence occurred during his arrest, describing what happened to him as a “coup d’état” led by the Army Chief of Ground Forces.

Information from Guinea-Bissau indicates that on Wednesday afternoon, gunfire was heard at the presidential palace and at the National Electoral Commission headquarters.

He was arrested at a time when the results of Sunday’s election were expected to be announced on Thursday.

Aside from President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who claimed victory, the camp of his rival, politician Fernando Dias da Costa, is also claiming to have won.
