Fighting has erupted between the M23 rebel group and a coalition of DRC forces including the FARDC, Wazalendo militias, Burundian troops, and the FDLR intensifying tensions in the conflict-hit eastern region.

The clashes took place in various villages of Masisi Territory in North Kivu Province, including Nyabashwa, Kasheke, and Bituna.

Reports indicate that M23 fighters, who had come from the Kazinga area, launched early morning attacks on FARDC and Wazalendo positions in these three villages.

Sources further confirm that both light and heavy gunfire was heard. The two sides continue to battle, even though late last week AFC/M23 and the government of the DRC signed a set of fundamental principles intended to lead both parties toward ending the nearly four-year conflict between them.

These principles are contained in eight key points:

  • The release of prisoners (captured during the conflict)

  • A mechanism to monitor compliance with the ceasefire

  • Ensuring humanitarian agencies can reach those in need

  • Restoration of state authority

  • Disarmament and reintegration of armed groups

  • Facilitating the safe return of internally displaced persons and refugees

  • Economic reconstruction

  • Justice, truth, and reconciliation

Meanwhile, a separate agreement between Rwanda and Congo is also expected to be signed, under the facilitation of the United States. This agreement will be signed by the leaders of both countries, Félix Tshisekedi and Paul Kagame.
