Cristiano Ronaldo warned over Donald Trump meeting as Louis Saha issues strong message
Cristiano Ronaldo has been urged to reconsider his public association with United States president Donald Trump after the pair was photographed together during a visit to the White House.
The meeting, which took place just days before Ronaldo had a FIFA suspension overturned ahead of the 2026 World Cup, has triggered criticism from former Manchester United striker Louis Saha, who believes the Portuguese star is being used as a “political pawn.”
Ronaldo’s appearance alongside Trump was seen around the world, but Saha fears the interaction could be interpreted as an endorsement of the president’s policies. Speaking to Pundit Arena, Saha said the 40-year-old’s global influence means his actions carry enormous weight even if he did not intend to send a political message.
“Cristiano is still the most influential footballer on the planet,” Saha said. “He might not have realised the ramifications of that visit. It may be taken as support for some of Trump’s policies, and that might not be what he intended.”
Saha also questioned the timing of the meeting, hinting that Ronaldo could appear aligned with Trump during a contentious political climate. He added that Ronaldo’s presence could even spark speculation that the forward had hoped for favorable treatment regarding his ban, although there is no suggestion this was the case.
The former France international also highlighted Ronaldo’s long-standing impact on global culture and public behavior. “I remember when he pushed soft drink bottles away at a press conference it caused a storm,” Saha said. “He has always had the ability to influence the wider world.”
Ronaldo has not publicly commented on the criticism since the photo circulated, but the incident has reignited debate around the role of high-profile athletes in political environments, especially as Ronaldo prepares for what could be his final major international tournament.
