Tuchel drops Bellingham from England squad despite return to fitness
Thomas Tuchel has left Jude Bellingham out of England’s squad, citing continuity over star power.
Jude Bellingham’s absence from Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad has raised eyebrows across the football world. The Real Madrid midfielder, recently voted England’s Fans’ Player of the Year, has been overlooked for upcoming fixtures against Wales and Latvia despite returning to fitness and starting in the Champions League this week.
Tuchel, however, insisted the decision was not about form or fitness alone. Instead, he emphasized the importance of continuity, rewarding the group that earned a commanding 5-0 victory in Serbia during the last international window. “Why change a winning team?” he told reporters, pointing to the chemistry and spirit that impressed him in September.
The omission comes amid lingering tension between Bellingham and Tuchel, stemming from comments the manager made in June when he described some of the 22-year-old’s on-pitch behavior as “repulsive” a remark that did not sit well with the player or his camp. Although Tuchel downplayed the rift, leaving Bellingham out even after his recovery suggests the relationship is far from smooth.
Bellingham is not the only high-profile absentee. Phil Foden and Jack Grealish have also been omitted, while Bukayo Saka returns after recovering from injury. England’s squad features a mix of established names such as Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, and Declan Rice, alongside younger faces like Jarell Quansah and Myles Lewis-Skelly, who continue to benefit from Tuchel’s willingness to trust emerging talent.
The 26-player list reflects Tuchel’s focus on maintaining unity and momentum rather than bowing to individual star power. Yet leaving out Bellingham, arguably England’s brightest midfield talent, just days after he was honored by supporters, is bound to spark debate about whether footballing or personal factors played the decisive role.
For now, Tuchel has doubled down on his vision of consistency and collective standards. But as England prepare for a crucial year building toward the 2026 World Cup, the question remains whether the omission of one of their most gifted players will strengthen the squad’s cohesion or risk alienating a generation-defining talent.
