Liverpool Back in for Marc Guehi as Crystal Palace Confirm Defender’s Imminent Departure
England centre-back Marc Guehi will leave Crystal Palace next summer, and Liverpool are ready to reignite interest after missing out on deadline day.
Liverpool could finally secure the signing of long-term defensive target Marc Guehi after Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner confirmed the centre-back will leave the club at the end of the season. Guehi, whose contract expires next summer, turned down a renewal offer and is expected to be at the centre of a transfer battle, with Liverpool leading the race.
The Merseyside giants previously saw a deadline-day move collapse, as Palace were unable to secure a replacement in time Brighton's Igor Julio was lined up but ultimately joined West Ham on loan. The Eagles' refusal to sell Guehi during their inaugural European campaign has now set up a scenario where he could leave on a free transfer, or possibly in January for a reduced fee.
Speaking on Friday, Glasner confirmed the situation: “Marc told us he won’t sign a new contract, so he will leave next year.” Despite efforts from Palace’s board, including chairman Steve Parish, Guehi made it clear he is seeking a new challenge. “That’s normal,” Glasner added. “Now it’s about how we manage this situation for the club’s future.”
With Ibrahima Konaté also out of contract next June and Giovanni Leoni suffering a season-ending injury, Liverpool’s need for defensive reinforcements has intensified. Guehi, an England international with Champions League ambitions, fits the profile manager Arne Slot desires athletic, composed in possession, and Premier League-proven.
Competition is expected to be fierce, with Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Barcelona all reportedly monitoring Guehi's situation. However, Liverpool’s prior negotiations and defensive needs may give them the edge, especially if they opt to make a cut-price January move rather than wait until summer and risk losing out to a European rival.
