Klopp’s Past Praise Highlights Salah Mystery as Tensions Rise at Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp once described Mohamed Salah as a “fantastic human being” and the finest modern-era forward Liverpool have possessed remarks that now echo with new significance amid the Egyptian’s escalating fallout with current manager Arne Slot.
Salah’s Liverpool future has been thrown into uncertainty after he delivered a stunning post-match interview at Elland Road, revealing his relationship with Slot had “completely disappeared” and hinting that next week’s game at Anfield could be his last before departing for the Africa Cup of Nations.
The 33-year-old, left out of Liverpool’s starting XI for three straight matches, appeared visibly frustrated following the 3–3 draw with Leeds. He suggested he no longer felt wanted by the club and that he had invited his parents to attend the Brighton fixture in what seemed an emotional farewell gesture.
Salah’s comments have fractured the calm Slot had been attempting to build in his first season. The Dutchman insisted he was caught off guard by the forward’s remarks but maintained there had been no personal dispute between them. Behind the scenes, however, the strain appears more severe than publicly acknowledged.
While the situation with Slot deteriorates, Klopp’s past words about his former No.11 provide a stark contrast. Early last season, the former Liverpool boss openly campaigned for the club to renew Salah’s contract, calling him an “outstanding athlete” and “the best ambassador his country could possibly have.”
Their relationship was not without its own flashpoints. The pair famously clashed on the touchline during a fiery draw at West Ham in May 2024, with Salah cryptically warning after the incident that there would be “fire” if he spoke publicly about what happened. Yet Klopp always insisted their disagreements were temporary.
“We’ve known each other long enough and respect each other enough to handle things privately,” he said at the time. “It was never a long-term problem.”
Salah’s future now hangs in the balance. A January exit once considered impossible is no longer off the table, with senior figures at Liverpool actively discussing possible outcomes should the rift prove irreparable. Teammates including Alisson Becker have reportedly reached out in an attempt to calm the situation.
Klopp’s past admiration for the forward underscores a broader dilemma for the club: Salah remains one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever players, but his relationship with the current regime may have reached a breaking point.
As things stand, his appearance at Anfield against Brighton could carry far more meaning than just another pre-AFCON farewell it may be the final chapter of an era.
