Guehi Breaks Silence on Failed Liverpool Move and Sends Clear Message over Future
Marc Guehi has offered fresh insight into the dramatic collapse of his summer transfer to Liverpool, insisting he holds no regrets and believes “everything happened the way it was meant to”.
The Crystal Palace captain, whose contract expires at the end of the season, had been on the brink of a £35million deadline-day switch to Anfield before the deal fell apart at the final hurdle.
Liverpool was prepared to finalize the move, but Palace pulled the plug after failing to secure a replacement centre-back in time. The decision left Guehi facing another campaign at Selhurst Park, and with no new contract on the horizon, the England defender is expected to be at the heart of serious January and summer transfer interest.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Guehi dismissed suggestions that the saga had been emotionally turbulent, explaining that his faith allowed him to remain calm amid the chaos.
“People assume it was a difficult moment, but it really wasn’t,” he said. “When you’re focused on what matters most, everything becomes clearer. I know God has a plan for me, and whatever is meant for me will happen at the right time.”
Guehi, whose father is a church minister, also opened up about the spiritual bond within the Palace dressing room. Team-mate Maxence Lacroix, a fellow committed Christian, revealed that several players began holding pre-match prayers during last season’s impressive FA Cup run.
Lacroix explained: “We said, ‘Why don’t we put the games in the hands of God?’ It felt strange at first, but after a few matches we started to see the impact there was a grace over the team. So we play for Jesus Christ, and that’s become part of our identity.”
The group’s unity continued into this season, with Guehi calling the fellowship “a source of strength” regardless of results on the pitch.
“It’s about more than football,” he added. “It’s about standing with your brothers, practising our faith together, and giving glory in everything good moments or bad. That’s what keeps us grounded.”
Palace now faces a pivotal decision. With Guehi unwilling to extend his stay, the club must choose between cashing in during the January window and watching a highly valuable asset walk away for free next summer. Liverpool, along with several leading European sides, is expected to monitor the situation closely.
For now, Guehi insists his full focus remains on Palace but his future is likely to dominate transfer headlines once again in the coming months.
