Former Coach Says Portuguese Legend’s Relentless Mindset Could Lead Him to 1,000 Goals and World Cup Glory
Cristiano Ronaldo’s drive for greatness shows no sign of slowing. At 40, the Al Nassr and Portugal forward continues to defy age, and according to one of his former coaches, his hunger remains as fierce as ever.
Hugo Oliveira, who worked with Ronaldo during Portugal’s 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign, says the all-time great is “still starving” a mentality that has pushed him to the brink of an unprecedented 1,000 career goals.
“He was a young lad, and now he’s the same. That mindset is contagious,” Oliveira told GiveMeSport. “Maybe his last World Cup could be the perfect way to finish his international journey.”
Ronaldo is set to make history again next year when he appears at his sixth World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Having already helped Portugal qualify comfortably, he has now become the top scorer in World Cup qualification history, continuing to break records in his 23rd year of professional football.
While the veteran forward has lifted almost every major trophy including five Champions Leagues, seven league titles, and the 2016 European Championship the World Cup remains the missing piece in an otherwise complete career.
Oliveira believes that Ronaldo’s leadership and mentality could inspire Portugal’s new generation, led by stars such as Rafael Leão, João Félix, and Bernardo Silva.
“We are one of the top five national teams that will fight to win the competition,” Oliveira added. “This generation must believe they can bring it home.”
Throughout his career, Ronaldo has evolved from a dazzling winger at Sporting CP and Manchester United into a clinical finisher at Real Madrid, Juventus, and now Al Nassr. His transformation from a wide forward to a pure goal-scorer has allowed him to maintain elite numbers well into his forties.
Even as his pace has faded, his precision, movement, and aerial power remain lethal keeping him among the game’s most productive players. At Al Nassr, he continues to find the net with trademark consistency, chasing the milestone that would cement his place as the most prolific scorer in football history.
For now, Ronaldo’s focus turns to Portugal’s upcoming qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland and Armenia. And as ever, the mission remains the same to win, to score, and to keep pushing boundaries no one else has touched.
