Reece James Withdraws From England Squad While Nico O’Reilly Gets First Call-Up
England manager Thomas Tuchel has been forced into a late squad change ahead of the upcoming international break after Chelsea Captain Reece James withdrew through injury.
The 25-year-old right-back picked up a knock during Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday and will miss both fixtures against Wales and Latvia.
James’ absence is another setback in a stop start season for the defender, who has struggled with recurring fitness issues. He was expected to play a key role in Tuchel’s plans as England prepare for a crucial World Cup qualifier against Latvia next Tuesday.
In his place, Tuchel has promoted Manchester City youngster Nico O’Reilly to the senior squad. The 20-year-old midfielder, who was initially named in the under 21s, has now been handed the chance to make his full England debut.
O’Reilly is highly regarded within City’s ranks and has represented England at every youth level from under-15s through to the under 21s. His technical ability and versatility in midfield have caught the attention of Tuchel, who has shown willingness to trust emerging talent in his tenure.
The call-up reflects England’s growing focus on integrating younger players into the senior setup, with O’Reilly joining the likes of Jarell Quansah and Myles Lewis-Skelly in recent squads. Tuchel’s decision could prove vital in building depth ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
England face Wales in a Wembley friendly on Thursday before traveling to Riga for the qualifier against Latvia, where O’Reilly could cap off a breakthrough year by making his first senior international appearance.
