Manchester City tightened the Premier League title race by easing past Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium, cutting Arsenal’s lead at the top to just two points after the Gunners’ dramatic defeat earlier in the day.

Rúben Dias, Joško Gvardiol and Phil Foden all scored as Pep Guardiola’s side delivered a composed, controlled display against a Sunderland team whose bright return to the top flight met a harsh Premier League reality. The visitors finished with 10 men after Luke O’Nien was sent off in stoppage time following a VAR intervention.

City initially struggled to shift Sunderland’s compact five-man defence, but two goals in four minutes changed the game’s rhythm entirely. Dias stepped forward from the back and powered a long-range effort that deflected off Dan Ballard before soaring into the top corner his second goal in four matches.

Moments later, Gvardiol rose above everyone to meet Foden’s inswinging corner, powering in a header that doubled the lead and effectively settled the contest before half-time.

With Sunderland forced to open up in the second half, City pushed for more. Jeremy Doku struck the post and Foden had a close-range follow-up blocked brilliantly. Erling Haaland saw a looping strike cleared off the line by Lutsharel Geertruida, before Rayan Cherki delivered a stunning ‘rabona’ assist for Foden to nod home City’s third.

Cherki’s creativity was a standout throughout, taking his Premier League assist tally to six this season and providing Guardiola with yet another dynamic attacking option behind Haaland.

Despite the scoreline, Sunderland produced moments of threat. Enzo Le Fée found the side-netting early on, while substitute Wilson Isidor missed a huge opportunity to halve the deficit after a rare Dias mistake Gianluigi Donnarumma saved smartly to preserve City’s clean sheet.

Granite Xhaka struck the post with a fierce low drive, but the visitors’ hopes evaporated late on when O’Nien was shown a red card for a studs-up challenge on Matheus Nunes, upgraded from yellow after a pitchside review.

City’s win, combined with Arsenal’s earlier defeat at Aston Villa, has tightened the title race and extended Guardiola’s remarkable record against newly promoted teams. Sunderland, meanwhile, remain seventh and continue to defy pre-season expectations despite the setback.

Guardiola praised his side’s patience and defensive scoring threat, noting the importance of Dias and Gvardiol stepping up during a tense opening half-hour.

Sunderland boss Régis Le Bris acknowledged the “fine margins” that defined the match, lamenting the missed chances at 2–0 but insisting his side remain ahead of schedule in their push for a top-half finish.
